Two of the nicest people in pop culture art, Australians, Sonny and Biddy of WE BUY YOUR KIDS, recently had a solo show at Mondo’s gallery in Austin, Texas.  Called “Harsh Majical.”  The duo showed up for the event and here are some exclusive photos from the opening by Austin, TX photographer TRENT LESIKAR.

Here is how Mondo described the event on their BLOG.

Mondo welcomes back beloved Australian artist duo, We Buy Your Kids, for the next gallery show, “Harsh Majical.” The show will run from August 29th through September 15th. The opening reception will be Friday, August 29th from 7 –10pm at the Mondo Gallery, located at 4115 Guadalupe St. in Austin, TX.

Sonny Day and Biddy Maroney, the faces behind Sydney-based We Buy Your Kids, are known for their colorful, off-beat design style. They combine hand-made and digital techniques to create their work, often experimenting with color, shape and texture. Their influences include a shared love of comic books, skateboarding, music and film.

The show’s title, “Harsh Majical,” came from a direct English translation of a Chinese description of WBYK’s work. “We felt it might sum up the final outcome, but more importantly describes the fun we’ve had working on this collection.” It will include prints from films previously tackled by Mondo artists, such as Alien and The Fly, but will also introduce some new titles such as White Men Can’t Jump and Thrashin’.

“When we started to think about movies for the show, Alien was one of the first that we chose,” said WBYK. “We both love it, everyone loves it, it’s an all time classic.” They had originally gone for a more static, art deco approach to the print, focusing on beautiful designs of the helmet and monster frozen in space. “It didn’t quite seem to illustrate the horror of the film, or the tension. Instead we let it rip with a bolder image of the terror inside man.”

EA6J6nyZvM9gbb52YNxtFjzhwyvkHB4HTVU5kCo8U4Q,j2K2afX_aJVe7uipuMBfCLxjdYg-SxW6-s60II9jKsM 0luMkD7Oh2hnLRtxxrxG17wcGOYcAmzYjWozSOgm-EA,nCAdNolaMueJ5U4IhvDILJQdj1dUbld-aFfUR8ML58M,g1t2puCQIERTxRex1VphwsObozW8B03_Tk2T1wvS0GU kp6lmKCzwz5KrFMJWLtrEOKtKg2PU6dXMHmBagLmDJk,OGWRBl3MLDPIVtsWoGHeNFUxs9L4SqSnXEasMGW1RHo

The show will also feature a softer take on sci-fi horror classic, The Fly. “When I first watched the film, I was surprised at how touching and sad it was. This tenderness was the first thing we wanted to convey in the poster. We zoomed right in so we could focus on those human emotions that run right through the movie, which are often overlooked in favour of the iconic glowing sci-fi, goopy-fleshed imagery,” said Day.

WBYK_TheFly_press

In addition to creating prints for Mondo’s online store, this will be the second gallery show featuring art from the talented duo. Their first, entitled “Tina’s Mom’s Boyfriend” (which opened in December of 2012), was a huge success and “Harsh Majical” is expected to be equally bizarre and awesome.

“We are over the moon to have another chance to show our work in their amazing space,” said the pair. “We cannot wait to get back to Austin.”

As you can see, Sonny and Biddy did a fantastic job.  Click the link below to see even more exclusive photos from this amazing opening.

Exclusive! FAMP Art and Chris Weston Deliver A Perfect October Print: “Trollhunter”

$

YES!  We are knee deep into October and the horror prints are dropping like the leaves in a sleepy New England town.  Piles and piles of grotesque, alarming, gory, disturbing images are turning up and today we get to give you an exclusive look at a sensational new print by the phenomenal U.K. artist Chris Weston for the folks over at FAMP Art.

Screen Shot 2014-10-14 at 12.02.02 AMBased in New York, FAMP Art is a company that specializes in creating officially licensed, limited edition screen printed posters of foreign films, pre-1980s classics and a few random goodies here and there of things we simply love.

A business years in the making, FAMP Art was founded to bridge the gap between pop culture art and art-house cinema, focusing on films that don’t get much love in the art world but are praised in the world of cinema (and that we ourselves are passionate about). Our goal is to fuse two different worlds through the glory of awesome and beautiful art prints.

We spoke to Chris Weston about the project, his background and Doctor Strange, here is what he had to say.

BLURPPY – Give us a little insight to your background.

Dredd Painting

I’m a British comic book veteran who has been working professionally for over a quarter of a century now. I am old. I started out working for 2000ad drawing Judge Dredd and Indigo Prime, but quickly got absorbed into the american comic book industry drawing books like Batman, Swamp Thing, Enemy Ace and The Fantastic Four.

mos1

I’m probably best known for two creator-owned series: “The Filth” and “Ministry of Space”. More recently I’ve made the jump over to the film industry, working closely with Albert Hughes on “The Book of Eli” and the aborted live-action version of “Akira”. We’ve just started work on a new movie project, but I’m not allowed to talk about that yet.

Screen Shot 2014-10-14 at 11.18.17 AM

BLURPPY – AHHHHHH… so bummed that the live action Akira was aborted!  That being said, we are NOW intrigued about the thing you CAN’T talk about. Guess we shall have to stay tuned. We really like “Trollhunter,” what drew you to this project?

CHRIS – I love Troll Hunter. I like horror films and dry humour and this film is the perfect combination of both those elements. I like it when absurd ideas are treated with a totally straight face. Otto Jesperson’s performance is great; I’d love to see him act in something else.

Flash Gordon Painting

Flash Gordon private commission

BLURPPY – Otto needs another shot at something else. Where there any unseen challenges with this one compared to your past projects?

CHRIS – Drawing the foliage. So… much… foliage. I already have a hopelessly over- detailed style, so rendering all the leaves, twigs, bushes and branches is a recipe for long hours at the drawing board. I hope they paid off.

BLURPPY – TREES!  The bane of many an artist! Yes, after seeing the prints, your hours of toiling at the drawing board absolutely paid off.  Besides “Trollhunter”, what would be your dream project/ property to work on?

Screen Shot 2014-10-14 at 11.35.10 AM

Fantastic Four by Chris Weston

CHRIS – I’d like to do some of the lesser known films and steer clear of all the same old movies that we’ve seen thousands of posters for. Everyone and their grandma seems to have drawn a Star Wars , Blade Runner or Alien poster…. I’d rather do something like “Zardoz” .

zardoz

BLURPPY – Very left of center choice, much like Sean Connery’s outfit in this one. I’d LOVE to get his honest feedback about filming that movie.  HE has to cringe when he sees that outfit right?  We LOVE your Dan Dare Toy design, please tell us you have some others up your sleeves in 2015?

Screen Shot 2014-10-14 at 1.28.33 PM

CHRIS – No, that was a one-off. But thanks for the kind words.

BLURPPY – Well even though you SAY it is one and done, we are still keeping our fingers crossed.  We saw an insane Doctor Strange commission on your site with what looks like the very first EVIL UNICORN we’ve ever seen, who would YOU like to see play Doctor Strange in the upcoming Marvel film?

Doctor StrangeCommission

Chris Weston private commission

CHRIS – No hesitation: Oded Fehr. There’s something very enigmatic or exotic about him that would perfectly suit The Sorcerer Supreme.

Oded-Fehr-oded-fehr-31806815-400-600

Oded Fehr

BLURPPY – Brilliant!  He was really good in The Mummy and we hadn’t thought of him yet.  He is now OUR #1 choice too!  We love food and we are curious, what’s your favorite snack

CHRIS – McVities Digestive Biscuits. Though they have tweaked the formula recently and they aren’t as good as they used to be.

chocolate-digestives

Hmmmm… we didn’t see THAT snack coming.  (Let’s be honest, Junior Mints are where it’s at, everything else pales in comparison.) Here is what FAMP had to say about Chis’ AWESOME “Trollhunter” prints.

To honor the change of seasons and the horror element associated with the month of October, FAMP Art is thrilled to announce their new print release for André Øvredal’s awesome comedic, fantasy horror flick “Trollhunter” (aka Trolljegeren).  To help bring this film to life in the screen printed poster world, FAMP Art teamed up with UK illustrator Chris Weston and together have delivered a work of art that truly encapsulates what a movie poster should be for this film.

Click the link below to see both versions of this fantastic print by Chris Weston for FAMP Art.

There will be two prints available for sale, both of which measure 24”x36”, on October 21st at a random time between 3pm and 8pm EST on the FAMP Art website.  The regular (English) version will have a run of 145 prints and will cost $45, the variant (Norwegian) version will have a run of 70 prints and will cost $60.  There will be a limit of one per person per household.

So, which one is your favorite?  Regular or Variant?  Be sure to follow these guys to stay up to date with all their new projects and releases. Major thank you to FAMP for the exclusive and to Chris for taking the time to speak with us.

Marvel’s “Doctor Strange #1″ By Jason Aaron & Chris Bachalo Is Coming This Fall

As we all await the cinematic appearance of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Marvel Comics is getting ready to bring fans up to speed with the Sorcerer Supreme.  Check out their official announcement below and read an interview with the comic’s creators.

Doctor_Strange_Logo

The Sorcerer Supreme returns for his first ongoing series in nearly twenty years!  And he’s making house calls! Marvel is pleased to announce DOCTOR STRANGE #1 – a new ongoing series from blockbuster creators Jason Aaron (Star Wars, Thor) and Chris Bachalo (Uncanny X-Men, Avengers)!

Prepare for a side of the Marvel Universe you’ve never seen before as the magical, mystical and all things weird lie at every turn. And if it’s bizarre enough, and you don’t know where to turn – call the Doctor. From inside his Sanctum Sanctorum – the strangest place in this or any universe, the Master of the Mystic Arts protects this realm from the supernatural.

Doctor_Strange_1_Cover

“Get ready for a brand new Doctor Strange for a brand new Marvel Universe,” says Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso.  “Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo have rebuilt Marvel’s ’Sorcerer Supreme’ from the ground up with an excitingly original take that redefines the character going forward.”

A dark new power is rising. One that will have repercussions for all magic users. The threat is growing, and Strange knows he won’t be powerful enough to stop it. If he is to have any kind of hope, it will take a different kind of Sorcerer Supreme. Because all magic comes with a price, and it’s high time Stephen Strange balanced the scales.

“None of Marvel’s other heavy hitters walk the same beat as Dr. Strange,” says Jason Aaron in an interview HERE. “None of them have to face the same sorts of repercussions whenever they use their powers. Being the Sorcerer Supreme is a unique responsibility. And it’s one that Stephen Strange embraces. Even though there’s no doubt that his job is one day going to leave him dead, damned or insane. So I want to celebrate all the weirdness that is Dr. Strange, while having him face a challenge unlike anything he’s ever faced before. One that rewrites the rulebook for what it means to be the Sorcerer Supreme.”

Our First Look At Benedict Cumberbatch As Doctor Strange Is Absolutely Magical

…Master Of The Mystic Arts….

Doctor_Strange_BannerWhen Marvel announced that they were moving forward with a Doctor Strange film, fans rejoiced.  When Marvel announced that Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange would be played by Benedict Cumberbatch, fans became ravenous for ANY info on the film.

Screen Shot 2015-12-28 at 9.56.23 AMToday, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY revealed some exclusive images showing Benedict as The Sourcerer Supreme and they are sensational.

Strange_Tales_110_Cover_Doctor_Strange DSCreated by artist Steve Ditko during the Silver Age of comics in 1963, Doctor Strange first appeared in STRANGE TALES #110 and has been and remains one of Marvel’s most powerful characters.

DS3Dr Stephen Strange started as a brilliant doctor but when a car accident leaves him unable to pursue his passion of surgery and healing people he starts looking for way to heal his impaired hands and return to his former greatness.

DS4In his search, Strange comes across an individual known as The Ancient One, high in the Himalayas.  After awhile, he gains the trust of this powerful being and becomes his trusted apprentice and learns the mystic arts.

DS1Strange is unlike any character we have seen from Marvel as he deals in magic, mystical forces and foes from bizarre realms and alternate dimensions.  With Cumberbatch in the lead role and Scott Derrickson in the Director’s chair, we are in for one hell of a ride. The supporting cast is pretty amazing as well including: Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mads Mikkelsen.

DS2We are pretty confident that this image is Strange’s lair, the “Sanctum Sanctorum”.  You can see the Cloak of Levitation and we can only assume that the other things on display are things like the Eye of Agamotto, the Book of the Vishanti, the Orb of Agamotto among other things.

DS5

Here is how Marvel describes the good Doctor over on their OFFICIAL WEBSITE.

Doctor Strange is a skilled athlete and martial artist with substantial medical and magical knowledge. Though an expert surgeon, Strange’s nerve-damaged hands prevent him from performing surgery except when supplemented by magic.

Doctor-Strange-concept-artDoctor Strange is one of the most powerful sorcerers in existence. Like most sorcerers, he draws his power from three primary sources: the invocation of powerful mystic entities or objects, the manipulation of the universe’s ambient magical energy, and his own psychic resources. Strange’s magical repertoire includes energy projection and manipulation, matter transformation, animation of inanimate objects, teleportation, illusion-casting, mesmerism, thought projection, astral projection, dimensional travel, time travel and mental possession, to name a few. The full range of his abilities is unknown. Doctor Strange’s powers are sometimes less effective against strictly science-based opponents, although he can overcome this limitation with effort.

Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” will cast its spell on fans when it hits theaters on November 4th, 2016.  Stay tuned, we can’t WAIT for the first trailer.  Follow the film via their official TWITTER page.

“Open your mind, change your reality”

Doctor-Strange-Poster

When Marvel announced that they were doing a “Doctor Strange” film we were thrilled. When they announced that Dr. Steven Strange would be played by Benedict Cumberbatch we did a joyous dance and gave high-fives to everyone in the office!

doctor-strange

“Cumberbatch is set to star as Dr. Stephen Strange alongside Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo. Strange is a brilliant but egotistical surgeon who travels the world to restore his skills after a car accident leaves him unable to operate. In his travels, he meets the Ancient One, who teaches Strange the ways of magic in order to protect the Earth from a host of mystical foes.”

Screen Shot 2016-04-13 at 9.00.48 AM

Today we get a proper trailer and this film looks unlike anything Marvel has done to date. We mean that in a VERY good way because given their track record, it gotta be getting more and more difficult to raise the bar.  It’s Marvel’s first bold step into the metaphysical realm of the supernatural and we’re sure it won’t be their last. Give it a watch and let us know what you think.

Marvel Demi-God, Kevin Feige had this to say about Doctor Strange’s powers in a recent interview with EW.

“He can do a whole host of things, eventually,” Feige told the magazine. “He does cast spells, which in the comics have very sort of tongue-twisty fun names. We don’t want to shy away from that, because that’s what makes Doctor Strange Doctor Strange. He has a Cloak of Levitation that allows him to fly, but he doesn’t fly like Superman or like Thor. It’s almost got a consciousness of its own, this cloak, which, again, gives us a superhero with a red cape — which we’ve seen a few times — but allows us to do it in a wholly unique and wholly original way. He can create these mandalas of light that he can use as shields and he can use as sort of weapons. He can create portalas that will open before your eyes that he can step through and go to other places around the world. And frankly, even in this film, we’ll only touch upon what a lot of his powers are.”

doctor_strange_2016-HD

“Doctor Strange” is directed by Scott Derrickson and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Scott Adkins, Amy Landecker, and Mads Mikkelsen.  “Doctor Strange” hits theaters on November 4, 2016 and we can’t WAIT!

One of our most anticipated films in 2016 is absolutely, hands down, the beginning of Marvel’s foray into the multiverse, “Doctor Strange.”  This weekend at San Diego Comic Con, fans at the Hall H panel for the film got their first look at a new trailer and a new poster.  We LOVED the first poster and the new poster and trailer look sensational.

Check out the new trailer as “Doctor Strange” gets metaphysical and things get weird in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Here is what “Doctor Strange” director, Scott Derrickson had to say in an interview with ComicBook.com while they were at San Diego Comic Con.

“I think that the short answer is this is the movie where Marvel goes full weird,” Derrickson says. “That full weirdness is written in the Ditko images, the Jack Kirby images, the early Doctor Strange comic book panels that are still to this day so mind blowing.”

“What the comics did was, they brought with Doctor Strange an extra dimension into psychadelia, mysticism, and spirituality and all these very 60’s things and broke open the Marvel comic book universe into the Marvel multiverse,” the director adds. “I think Doctor Strange is going to be the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. It’s really serving the same function that the comic did. Even though it was a weird aberration as a comic book, I think it was a real linchpin in the comics. It ended up being decades of new stories and I think this movie will do the same thing.”
